"More Than Looks"

More than Looks (1)
"What matters is not your... hair... jewellery... clothes... Cultivate inner beauty." 1 Peter 3:3 TM

Fashion designers are concerned with the total look of the models they send down the catwalk. They must have perfect accessories such as the right hairstyle and make-up. And it's the same with God: He created you as a whole person with specific features, personality traits and emotional responses. He designed you to be a vibrant, thinking, feeling, fully functioning human being with your own unique attractiveness.

And He endowed you with more than just physical appearance. He also gave you talents and spiritual gifts - inner qualities He wants you to develop and display for His glory. You see, who you are on the inside should determine how you see yourself on the outside. When your 'looks' determine your sense of worth, a few extra pounds or a bad-hair day can wipe you out! Refuse to live that way!

The Bible says, "What matters is not your... hair... jewellery... clothes... but your inner disposition. Cultivate inner beauty, the... kind that God delights in" (1Pe 3:3-4 TM). When your self worth comes from God instead of people, you can wear a $5 outfit from the 'op' shop or a $500 one from a fashion boutique. You're fine either way, because you recognize that your outer appearance doesn't define who you are.

Inner beauty can't be bought, taken off a rack, applied like make-up or put on like a new suit. It's 'an inside job' that always finds a creative and appropriate expression on the outside. So, look at yourself today in God's mirror and try to see what He values most - your inner beauty.

"Be strengthened... by His Spirit in the inner man."Ephesians 3:16

A celebrity counselor recently told his television audience: "A lady flew across the nation to tell me how her husband had left her for another woman. The woman who came to see me was young, vibrant and beautiful. But suddenly she pulled out a photograph and said, 'Just look at her! He left me for that!' Sadly I thought, 'Ma'am, what you've been conditioned by society to think of as being all-important, really isn't. Outer appearance isn't the biggest issue at all.'"

Advertisers spend billions to get us to decorate a shell that's in a losing battle with Mother Nature and Father Time; all to create what we think will attract others. What we create may momentarily turn a head or two, but it has little or no ability to capture and hold a heart or mind. We think that by enrolling at the latest weight-loss centre, using the right toothpaste, being seen in the right places with the right people, we'll end up enjoying the right kind of life. And when it doesn't work, we get depressed and wonder what went wrong.

Sure it's important to always look your best, but when you become obsessed with your 'looks' you become shallow and superficial. And others quickly lose interest because they discover that although the box you came in is beautifully wrapped - it's empty! The real source of attractiveness is "His Spirit in the inner man." That's what ultimately wins hearts and attracts the right people to you, for the right purpose, at the right time.
