After five years of marriage, John and his wife, Johnetta were anticipating with joy the birth of Jack, their first son.
John and Johnetta were busily planning for their son’s future. They opened two savings accounts at the local bank, one a nest egg for Jack’s retirement, the other for his college education.
John and Johnetta prayed for their son every night before they went to sleep. “Dear Lord, please help us to raise our son to accept you and love you with all his heart,” John prayed.
“Help us to be the parents you want us to be,” Johnetta prayed.
A quick learner, Jack was already learning about prayer. “Help me, Father, to tell everyone about your grace, mercy and love,” he whispered.
About four months into the pregnancy, Jack decided to surprise his mom and dad with a little conversation. “Good morning, mom and dad,” Jack said one morning as his parents were eating breakfast.
Good morning, son,” John said jubilantly. “But I’m a little surprised. I didn’t even know an unborn baby could speak.”
“Well, I’ve been doing my share of listening,” Jack replied. “When the two of you are talking to each other, I’m listening. When the minister is preaching his sermons, I’m listening with ears wide open. And when the audio Bible tapes are playing in the car, I’m listening.”
Jack told his parents his favorite portions of Scripture included the Biblical account of creation from the book of Genesis and the story of the birth of Jesus from the book of Luke.
“I feel those are among the most important stories in the entire Word of God,” Jack smiled.
Jack told John and Johnetta about his future plans. “The Sovereign Lord has told me He wants me to work as a missionary, taking the Good News of Jesus to people around the world,” he said.
“That’s a noble calling, Jack,” said John.
“And you can be sure we will be praying for you every step of the way,” said Johnetta.
“Thanks very much for your support, mom and dad,” Jack said. “With your prayer and financial support and the direction of the Holy Spirit, I’m surely going to succeed in fulfilling the Lord’s will for my life.”
“Financial support?” John and Johnetta asked in unison.
“That’s right, mom. That’s right, dad. “I learn very quickly, and although I haven’t yet been born, I already know that money is a very important piece of the puzzle when it comes to the work of the ministry!”
