Pastor Melvin was well-known throughout the city for his brand of overwhelming generosity.

The Sovereign Lord had blessed Pastor Melvin with an abundance of financial wealth, and the minister was very eager to share his blessings.

Birthdays. Anniversaries. Major holidays. Minor holidays. Pastor Melvin looked for every opportunity to be a blessing to individuals, non-profit organizations and business enterprises city-wide.

The minister even shared his wealth when there was no obvious reason for being so generous. Pastor Melvin developed the habit of regularly searching the local phone directory and selecting someone to receive a gift of $1,000.

Pastor Melvin used the telephone directory gifting program as a Bible educational program. After the intended recipient answered the phone, he or she was required to answer three questions from the Old Testament and/or New Testament.

If the person correctly answered all three questions, he or she received the $1,000. If he or she correctly answered two questions, he or she received $500. One correct answer resulted in a gift of $250 being awarded.

Pastor Melvin called a man named Maury. “I’m Pastor Melvin from the church just down the road from you,” said the minister. “I’m calling to give you $1,000. To receive the money, you just need to answer three questions from God’s Word, the Bible.”

“Well, Pastor, I could really use the money. I don’t know a lot about the Bible, but I’ll do my best.”

“Great!” exclaimed Pastor Melvin. “Here’s your first question. According to the Old Testament, who was the world’s first man, and how many years did he live?”

“His name was Adam, and he lived to be 930 years old.”

“Correct,” said Pastor Melvin.

“Which Old Testament prophet was swallowed by and lived in a great fish for three days and three nights?”

“That would be the prophet Jonah.”

“Right again,” smiled Pastor Melvin. “Now here is your third question. What are the four gospels of the New Testament?”

“I’m not sure,” replied Maury. “But I’ll guess Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.”

“Perfect,” beamed Pastor Melvin. “And since you’re in a real financial bind right now, I’m going to throw in an extra $500 to help you with your Christmas holiday.”

“Thanks, Pastor Melvin. I promised the Lord that if He provided an extra $500 I would give all of it to my local church. The money will be used to buy Christmas gifts for poor kids in our community. But why would you want to do that?”

“It’s simple,” replied Pastor Melvin. “In the course of ministry and in the course of life, I’ve found out that no matter how much you give you just can’t out-give God.”
